Draw the monkey and the flowers - Dibuja el mono y las flores

We know that Frida used to paint herself surrounded by animals. She felt alone and many times she was only accompanied by her pets. Between her pets we can find monkeys (Fulang Chang o Caimito de Guayabal), dogs (Señor y Señora Xólotl), parrots and even deers.

It must have been a wonderful experience to live among so many exotic animals!!

Tin art - Arte en estaño

The Mexican folk artist found painted tin to be a versatile mean for creating decorative, fun and colorful items. Their skills in tin punching and etching enable them to create detailed works of art on a luminaria or creating brightly colored animal sconces and mirrors.

Frida used this technique when she painted "The Frame":

In this unusual self portrait by Kahlo, she seems to be experimenting with "mixed medium". The self portrait of Frida and the blue background are painted on a sheet of aluminum while the boarder of birds and flowers is painted on the back side of a glass that lays on top of the portrait.

Perhaps, we could try to do something related to this.

La Calavera Catrina ('Dapper Skeleton', 'Elegant Skull') is a 1910–1913 etching by famous Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada. The image describes a female skeleton dressed only in a hat befitting the upper class outfit of a European of her time. She is offered as a satirical portrait of those Mexican natives who were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the pre-revolutionary era. She in particular has become an icon of the Mexican Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

While the original work by Posada introduced the character, the popularity of La Calavera Catrina as well as her name is derived from a work by artist Diego Rivera in 1948, Sueño de una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central (Dream of a Sunday afternoon along Central Alameda).

Rivera depicts Mexico's major figures, which include himself, Posada, and his wife Frida Kahlo. Rivera took inspiration from the original etching and gave Calavera a body as well as more of an identity in her elegant outfit as she is poised between himself and Posada. The intent seemed to be to show the tradition of welcoming and comfort the Mexicans have with death and especially the identity of a lady of death, harking back to the heritage of the Aztec goddess Mictecacihuatl. Catrina has come to symbolize not only El Día de los Muertos and the Mexican willingness to laugh at death itself, but originally Catrina was an elegant or well-dressed woman, so it refers to rich people"Death brings this neutralizing force; everyone is equal in the end. Sometimes people have to be reminded."
